Why Free Tutoring?

If you are new to tutoring, or if you would like to gain more experience working as a tutor, try offering free tutoring! Many people simply cannot contemplate that a person will volunteer to offer a free tutoring service, so if you do volunteer to offer free tutoring, you are in minority! Free tutors generally work with volunteer organizations that target special groups or students. However, you don't have to join a volunteer organization to offer free tutoring. Many tutors post advertisements in places such as the Student Union Building. Some people approach teachers and college professors to offer their services as a free tutor.

Despite any concerns that you may have, people are generally good. When you offer free tutoring, people will recognize that you are offering a valuable service and will not abuse your offer. In fact they may be amazed that you are willing to offer free help! Tutoring is looked upon as a privilege that only wealthy families or large companies can afford. Some students simply cannot afford paid tutoring, no matter how small. By offering free tutoring you are are helping to relieve some of the challenges they are going through. You can also approach social welfare groups to offer free tutoring to certain ethnic groups in your neighborhood. Some migrants spend years in a new country, not knowing the language or culture. Most migrants cannot afford to pay school fees, but they will appreciate your offer to be tutored for free.

If you are new to tutoring, offering a free tutoring service will help you gain experience and a better understanding of what tutoring is all about. Many paid tutors start tutoring without any prior experience in tutoring. Paid tutoring raises a students expectation. By offering free tutoring, you relieve yourself of any unnecessary pressure to perform, and to do everything right.

Free Tutoring: Some things to Consider

If you plan on offering free tutoring, keep these points in mind:

A volunteer tutor should not have to work their schedule around a student's schedule. You need to balance your work, studies or family priorities into your schedule. You need to be clear about your priorities and communicate to your students to let them know how much time you can devote to the free tutoring session.
If a student is behind in their studies, it may be beyond your ability to help them. Some students are so far behind in their studies that you would have to re-teach the whole subject again just for them to catch up. Ask the student to talk to his or her professor and to arrange other alternatives.
Don't be late or tardy as a tutor! When you make an appointment, keep it and if you can't make it, be sure to call up and apologize to your students. Just because you're offering free tutoring doesn't mean that you can show up whenever you want. It doesn't matter if you're a paid or free tutor, you need to keep your commitments.
