  1. Gauge Your Students Language Proficiency Level
It can be difficult to accurately gauge the level of english for a particular student. He/she may be very good in writing, but lack conversational skills or vice-versa. On your first day to tutor, prepare an introduction lesson by asking personal questions about his/her interests, learning goals, hobbies and personal ambitions.
  2. Prepare Your Lessons
If you have to deliver a lesson on the first day, prepare a few different lesson plans with varying levels of difficulty. Check our intermediate level esl lesson plans with streaming video for ESL/EFL online tutoring. There is also beginner and advance level lesson plans.
  3. Orientate Your Students On Online Technology
It is also a good idea, at the beginning of a new class, to orientate your students on how to use the most common features in your web-conference and VOIP tools. You will find that a majority of first time ESL students will not understand the English vocabulary and jargon used for online communication. It is always a good idea to explain some of the basic terms and tools, and how to use those tools if necessary - not doing so can lead to miscommunication later on.
