- Follow An Agenda
Set an agenda for your online english class. Include an estimated duration for each activity and stick to
it.
- Sound Quality Issues
During an online class session, if you or your student starts to
experience sound quality issues, hang up and dial back in again. Sometimes these problems clear themselves
up when you terminate the call.
- Avoid Fixing Techical Problems During Class
Avoid spending time trying to troubleshoot technology and connectivity issues - stick to your role as
an online english tutor. Make backup plans to solve technology problems for your online english class. If a
particular student has computer problems, call another staff member to help attend to that particular
students needs while you continue to deliver your online English lessons to your other students.
- Ask Students to Turn Off Instant Messenging Programs
Always make it a rule that all students turn off their instant messenging programs
(such as MSN or Yahoo Messenger). These applications can be very distracting, and some streaming media
applications can take up bandwidth and processing power which in turn affects the performance quality
of your own connection.
- Don't Record Your Classroom Sessions
Avoid making promises that your internet english sessions can recorded and delivered to a students email address. Although this is possible in theory, in reality it is extremely
difficult to send large voice and video images by email. The reason for this is that recorded files take up alot of memory space and upload time.
Free email services such as Yahoo or Hotmail will not allow you to send files that are larger than 25MB (or less than 10-15
minutes of recording time). If you must record a session, we advise that you do so and mail it in CD or DVD format. Another option is to have the files uploaded to a website for students to download.
- Avoid Using Cellular and Cordless Phones
When teaching an online english class, avoid using cellular and cordless phones because of static.
Also avoid using speakerphones because of background noise.
