Preparations Before Class

  1. Be early to Class
Online tutors should ideally arrive at least 30 minutes before the start of class. Compared to teaching in a classroom setting, online tutoring usually takes double the time to prepare and to deliver . Always check to make sure that your internet connection, your audio and your videoconferencing software is setup and running properly.
  2. Adjust Your Curriculum to the Students Learning Needs
When preparing your lesson plan, get feed back on the learning goals and needs from your students. This encourages your students to become active, rather than passive learners. Make every online tutoring session meaningful, relate lessons to your students goals, hobbies and interests.
  3. Minimize Written Exercises
Unless the goal of your class is for the student to improve his or her writing skill, limit written exercises to be completed for homework. The reason for this is that it takes twice as long to communicate and work together when you are online than if you are in a physical classroom setting. However, if you set exercises to complete during your online class, make sure that it can be done fairly quickly; or better still give the exercises to your students to complete for homework. You can then review their homework at the start of your next class. Use the avilable class time to go through any previous exercises or tasks that your students have trouble completing. This not only helps you stay focused, but interacting with students helps to effectively maximize their talk and language learning time.
  4. Setup Your Equipment Before Each Class
For web-conferencing setup your desktop display to a 1024x768 resolution. This is the optimal setting for web conferencing. By adjusting your screen's resolution, it helps to greatly improve the picture quality of a students computer with lesser quality settings.
